Type: Internal 2DRPG illustration 1/2 page speed painting
I'm not so good at spaceships or vehicles of any sort, so they are intresting to work on. Produced for Nova Praxis.
Process and Associating images
Bit more information on how it was made as its seems popular. I have a set of custom shapes which I use to build up detail in 3 layers. Shadow, mid tones and light. The process is somewhat hapazard but people seem to like looking a repeated shapes in images; which the custom shapes help to do. In this instance 2-4 shapes have been used to create the whole image. You can then transparency lock the shadow, mid tones or light layers and drag more custom shapes to increase detail , push areas into the shadows or define by painting onto it. Then finally when i'm happy with the design I touch up edges add additional colours.
The custom shapes are created using a photograph, desaturating it and pushing the levels until solid greys/black/whites are created, magicwand which ever solid colour you want, then right click, convert into path. I then save this path as a custom shape. Its a techique the artist sparth coined. In this instance the ship shapes have been made from photos of aircraft carriers, the tops of buildings [to detail paneling] a circuit board for circular bits and the Dover clifts for discolouration and planets surface.
I enjoy using this method for landscapes and chunky vehicles because it generates ideas quickly with, in most cases happy accidents. A draw back however is that designs can start to look very similar. Which isn't a a problem on one project where a unified look can be good, but more so for different projects with different clients as they may get upset that you're creating similar designs .
Below are examples where I use the same custom shapes to create images. Notice that the same detailing on ships undersides is cropping up on levels as well.

I think you should have more confidence in your ability to draw vehicles and ships!
